Needed = guests × 50% × 4.5 sq ft; the floor is the smallest square in 3-ft steps at or above that, because rental panels are 3 × 3 or 4 × 4 ft. A floor that is too big looks empty on the photos; too small and people dance on the grass.

Placing it
Put the floor where the band or DJ faces the tables, not in a corner, and keep the bar on the far side so the traffic between them crosses the room and pulls people past the floor. Under a tent the floor is one of the zones the tent calculator adds to the seating; on grass it needs a subfloor, which rental companies quote separately. Leave two or three feet of clearance around the edge for the photographer.

What size dance floor for 100 guests?
15 × 15 ft. The rental rule assumes half the guests dance at once and each needs 4.5 sq ft, so 100 guests need 225 sq ft, which is exactly a 15 × 15 floor (25 panels of 3 × 3). For 150 guests it is 18 × 18; for 200, 21 × 21.
How big is a 12 × 12 dance floor, and how many people?
144 sq ft, comfortable for about 32 dancers at once, which suits a party of 60-65 guests. It is the most common small rental size and fits under a 20 × 20 tent with room for a DJ.
Why half the guests?
Because at any moment during dancing, about half the room is at the bar, at a table or outside. It is the figure rental companies plan with. For a young crowd or a wedding with a great band, use 60-70%; for a corporate event or a crowd that mostly sits, 30%.
Is a bigger dance floor better?
No. A floor that is too big looks empty in photos and feels awkward to step onto; a full-looking floor pulls more people in. Size it for the peak and let it be crowded.
